    The first man to successfully swim the English Channel, Captain Matthew Webb was born in Shropshire and learned how to swim in open water in the River Severn in Coalbrookdale. He left his home town at the age of 12 to train on the HMS Conway and joined the merchant navy as an apprentice.
    Captain Matthew Webb was a British professional swimmer. He was the first person to swim across the English Channel, the body of water between England and France. Captain Webb was born in Shropshire in 1848, one of 12 children.

American Charles Toth of Boston completed the swim on 9 September 1923, in 16 hours and 40 minutes.

    Gertrude Ederle's successful cross-channel swim began at Gris Nez in France at 07:05 am on 6 August 1926. She came ashore at Kingsdown, Kent, England, in a total time of 14 hours and 39 minutes, making her the first woman to complete the crossing and setting the record for the fastest time.
