Tattoos have been found on human remains from at least 49 archaeological sites, including locations in Greenland, Alaska, Siberia, Mongolia, western China, Egypt, Sudan, the Philippines and the Andes ^{1 2}. The oldest discovery of tattooed human skin to date is found on the body of Ötzi the Iceman, dating to between 3370 and 3100 BC ¹. The practice can be traced back to ancient Egypt, with stone and metal tools used to create tattoos on human skin ³. Polynesia, Samoa, and the indigenous Pacific Islands are believed to be the earliest adopters of tattoo culture before they slowly spread across Southeast Asia and Africa ³. New York City is considered the birthplace of modern tattoos ⁴. The word “tattoo” comes from Polynesian languages such as Tahitian, Samoan or Marquesan ⁵.
