Lake Huron was named after the Huron First Nations communities that inhabited the region. The French named it for the Native American tribe they called “hure” (Hurons – meaning “head”- which refers to the strange way they dressed their hair. The tribe referred to itself as Wendat (Wyandotte), meaning “dwellers on a peninsula”. Lake Huron was originally called La Mer Douce, the sweet or freshwater sea by French explorers. In Canada, the Lake Huron is part of the traditional territories of the Tionontati (Petun), Neutral, Huron-Wendat and Anishinaabe.
