  2. Clan Lamont ruled most of the Cowal peninsula in Argyll for centuries. However, the clan's standing was damaged by the Dunoon Massacre in 1646, when Campbell clansmen killed around 200 Lamont clansmen. Many Lamonts moved, particularly to the Scottish Lowlands. Today, Lamonts are widespread in Canada, Australia, Britain and other countries.

Clan Lamont are a Highland clan, alleged to have descended from the Irish prince Ánrothán Ua Néill. They ruled the Cowal peninsula in Argyll on the west coast of Scotland for several hundred years, although their defeat by clan Campbell in the Dunoon massacre was havy and resulted in many Lamonts moving to the Scottish Lowlands.
Legend has it that the clan is descended the royal house of Dalriada and from the O'Neill princes of Tyrone in Ireland in the 11th century. But the first firm evidence for the name is in the early 13th century when Laumanus, son of Malcolm, granted land at Kilmun and Kilfinan in Argyll to the monks from Paisley Abbey.
