Pencil lead is made from graphite and is available in various hardness grades. The hardness of the lead is controlled by changing the clay content in the graphite. Technical lead hardness is specified using the H-B (hardness/blackness) scale. 9H is the hardest, and 7B is the softest.

B on its own is just a little softer than HB. 2B, 3B and 4B are increasingly soft. Further up the range, 9B is the very softest lead available, but so soft and crumbly that it's rarely used. Anything over 4B is probably too soft for most people's day-to-day use. Harder leads than HB get H ratings.

The H2-H4 grades fall in the harder range of pencils, with the H2 being the softest and the H4 being the hardest. These grades are perfect for sketching, outlining, and creating intricate details in your artwork. They are also great for technical drawings and diagrams.
