    • According to 5 sources
MAC anesthesia — also called monitored anesthesia care or MAC — is a type of sedation during which a patient is aware and able to breathe on their own. MAC is typically used for outpatient surgeries that require minor sedation.
Also known as monitored anesthesia care or conscious sedation, MAC anesthesia is a type of sedation where you remain aware of your surroundings and stay calm. The anesthetist administers it through an IV into the skin and muscle around the area on which surgery will be performed. You become sedated but can follow instructions with ease.
MAC stands for monitored anesthesia care. Sometimes, healthcare professionals call it MAC anesthesia. An anesthesiologist, or sometimes an anesthetist, administers MAC. They watch over a person during a medical procedure and give them drugs to ensure they do not feel pain or anxiety.
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) defines monitored anesthesia care (MAC) as a planned procedure during which the patient undergoes local anesthesia together with sedation, and analgesia is provided by an anesthesiologist.
Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) has been described as a specific anesthesia service for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures performed under local anesthesia along with sedation and analgesia, titrated to a level that preserves spontaneous breathing and airway reflexes, according to the latest American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) update in 2008.
