The Paleolithic or Palaeolithic (/ ˌpeɪlioʊˈlɪθɪk, ˌpæli -/ PAY-lee-oh-LITH-ik, PAL-ee-), also called the Old Stone Age (from Ancient Greek παλαιός (palaiós) 'old' and λίθος (líthos) 'stone'), is a period in human prehistory that is distinguished by the original development of stone tools, and which represents almost the entire period of human prehistoric technology. [ 1]
Paleolithic or Old Stone Age: from the first production of stone artefacts, about 2.5 million years ago, to the end of the last Ice Age, about 9,600 BCE. This is the longest Stone Age period.
Paleolithic means “old stone age.” At the beginning of the Paleolithic Period, early humans made chopping tools out of stones. These tools did not change much for thousands of years. Then humans learned to chip flakes off stone. With this method they made better tools, such as scrapers and chisels.
