Kyokushuzan became the first Mongolian sekitori when he reached juryo in March 1995 as well as the first Mongolian to reach makuuchi in September 1996. Following Kyokushuzan's success in the sport, many aspiring Mongolians moved to Japan with hopes of joining the sport and many Oyakata's visited Mongolia with the intention of recruiting.

    Asashoryu became the first Mongolian to reach the yokozuna rank in March 2003 and cemented the Mongolian dominance in sumo. Hakuho reached the rank of yokozuna in May 2007 and is considered the greatest rikishi in history. Harumafuji, Kakuryu, and Terunofuji have also reached the top rank in sumo.

    As of 2023, there has been 69 sumo wrestlers to list their birthplace as Mongolia, with majority coming from the capital Ulaanbaatar. Of the 69 Mongolian sumo wrestlers, 37 have reached the elite sekitori ranks.
