  2. Mycelium is the undifferentiated body of a typical fungus1. It may be microscopic in size or developed into visible structures, such as brackets, mushrooms, puffballs, rhizomorphs, sclerotia, stinkhorns, toadstools, and truffles1. There are three types of mycelium2:
    • Mycorrhizae: “The Symbiotic Relationship” Most cultivated plants grow best in a relationship with mycorrhizal fungi and some even require the symbiotic relationship. The fungus attaches itself to the root of the plant and maximizes the plants surface area.
    • Saprophytic: “The Garbage Collectors” The majority of fungi are saprophytic.
    • Parasitic: “Disease Causing”.

It may be microscopic in size or developed into visible structures, such as brackets, mushrooms, puffballs, rhizomorphs (long strands of hyphae cemented together), sclerotia (hard, compact masses), stinkhorns, toadstools, and truffles.
