    The history of Nagoya dates from 1610, when a great castle was erected by the Owari branch of the powerful Tokugawa shogunate. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), which marked the end of shogunal government, Nagoya continued as a commercial centre.
    The city of Nagoya was established in 1610 when Tokugawa Ieyasu moved the capital of Owari province there from Kiyosu, seven kilometers away. A new castle was built, and the entire population of 60,000 moved to the new location.
