    Causes

    • The exact reasons for panic attacks are unknown, but the below factors play a role:
    • Genetics
    • Stress
    • Sensitive temperament
    • Changes in brain functioning
    • Depression
    • Conditions such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic Stress disorder, hyperthyroidism and Wilson’s disease
    • Drug use
    • Phobias
    • The risk factors include:
    • Depression
    • Having stressful life event such as divorce or death of a loved one.
    • Gender- women are more likely to get a panic attack
    • Family history of anxiety or panic disorders
    • Use of drugs or alcohol
    • Having any previous traumatic events either as a child or as an adult.

    Panic attacks begin all of a sudden without giving any warning. They can strike at any time and may have occasional or frequent attacks.

    Symptoms include:

    • Breathlessness
    • Chest pain
    • Sweating
    • Shaking
    • Headache
