What is normally referred to as the "Golden Circle" is a day trip loop out of Reykjavik, done in one day, so it is hardly an alternative to driving the Ring Road. One week for the Ring Road, including arrival and departure is not ideal.

Keeping that in mind -- I need some thoughts and advice on whether I should do the traditional ring road (Golden, Vik, Hofn, Seydisfjördur, Lake Mytvan) OR should I do just the Golden Circle and the Westfjords instead.

In March daylight hours are very few, bad weather very likely, so a ring road trip would involve a lot of darkness driving. A tour company is a fabulous idea, leave the driving to the pros. Agree a lot on south coast tour and golden circle tour. A night or so in Reykjavik too.
