It is not clear why he had not married during the early 1450s at the same time as his brother Edmund. To remain unmarried at the age of around 54, Jasper’s current age, was extremely unusual.
WEBJasper was also given a wife – Katherine Woodville, Dowager Duchess of Buckingham, and sister of Queen Elizabeth Woodville. Katherine was a wealthy widow, and the couple lived very comfortably on her dower estates at Thornbury and Sudeley in Gloucestershire, although they had no children.
WEBFour years before Jasper came to court, Henry VI had married Marguerite of Anjou. Marguerite was 15 years old and niece by marriage to Charles VII of France. Charles VII, being the brother of Katherine de Valois, was, of course, Jasper’s uncle but Marguerite was his wife’s niece and therefore far more distantly related to Jasper.
