The radicle in dicots and monocots differ in the following ways:
    • In most dicots, the radicle gives rise to an apical meristem, which continues to produce root tissue for most part of the plant’s life. However, in monocots, the radicle aborts and new roots arise adventitiously from nodes in the stem.
    • The radicle in monocots is surrounded by a thin sheath called coleorhiza, whereas that in dicots is not.
    • Radicels are of two types depending on their orientation; antitropous radicles point away from the hilum on the seed coat whereas syntropous radicles point towards the hilum. However, the radicle does not exist on the plant in any capacity in monocots.
