  2. Upper atmosphere
    • According to 3 sources
C-14 is formed in the upper atmosphere by nuclear reactions initiated by neutrons in cosmic radiation (14 N 7 + 1 n → 14 C 6 + 1 H 1). Once formed, the C-14 reacts with oxygen to form 14 CO 2. This enters the carbon cycle, circulating through the atmosphere, oceans and biosphere.
Carbon 14 is continually being formed in the upper atmosphere by the effect of cosmic ray neutrons on nitrogen 14 atoms. It is rapidly oxidized in air to form carbon dioxide and enters the global carbon cycle. Plants and animals assimilate carbon 14 from carbon dioxide throughout their lifetimes.
Carbon-14 is continually being produced in the upper atmosphere where nitrogen-14 (14 N) atoms are bombarded with neutrons produced by cosmic rays. The chemical properties of 14 C are similar to those of 12 C. Hence, once formed, it combines with oxygen and mixes into the biosphere just like 12 C.
