OKB is a transliteration of the Russian initials of "опытно-конструкторское бюро" – opytno konstruktorskoye byuro, meaning 'experiment and design bureau'. During the Soviet era , OKBs were closed institutions working on design and prototyping of advanced technology , usually for military applications .
