    Hailing from Illinois, Olive Oatman was a young woman captured and enslaved by a Native American tribe that killed her parents and several siblings. She and her sister were then sold to the Mohave tribe where they were used as slaves for doing menial tasks. The Mohave people tattooed the two girls to make them part of their tribe.
