Orion was a giant hunter in Greek mythology. Some stories say he was the son of Zeus *, Poseidon*, or Hermes*. Others claim that he was born from a bull's hide that was buried after the king of Boeotia urinated on it. Orion went to the island of Chios, where King Oenopion asked him to drive all the wild beasts from the land.

In Greek mythology, Orion represents a hunter who was the son of Poseidon, the god of the sea. Orion was said to be killed by a mere scorpion, possibly for retribution. Orion is a mid sized constellation however the constellation is really recognizable by its distinct shape of a hunter holding a weapon.

The story of Orion has many different versions. He is considered to be Boeotian by birth, born (according to a late legend) of the earth (from a buried bull hide on which three gods had urinated). Some legends have him as the son of Poseidon. He is associated with the island of Chios, from which he is said to have driven the wild beasts.

The constellation got its name of the hunter from the Greeks. In Greek mythology, Orion was a great and handsome hunter. According to one story, he loved the goddess Artemis, who was also a hunter. He lived with her in the forest. But Artemis’ brother Apollo did not like Orion. He tricked Artemis into shooting Orion with an arrow and killing him.

The story of the adventures of Orion, the hunter, is the one for which there is the most evidence (and even for that, not very much); he is also the personification of the constellation of the same name; he was venerated as a hero, in the Greek sense, in the region of Boeotia; and there is one etiological passage which says that Orion was responsible for the present shape of the Strait of Sicily.
