Axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) is a surgical procedure used in certain cases of breast cancer where the tumors have spread to the lymph nodes around your underarms (axilla). This procedure is done to remove the lymph nodes and find out if they have cancer cells in them. The surgeon will make an incision under the arm and remove most of the lymph nodes from that area. ALND can remove lymph nodes located above, below or directly underneath a muscle that runs along the side of the upper chest. ALND is more likely to affect arm function and cause lymphedema than sentinel node biopsy.
