    Scott Joplin (January 1868 - April 1, 1917) was an African-American composer and instrumentalist who became the leading exponent of ragtime music. Ragtime combined African-American syncopation and folk melodies with European classical conventions to create an original American musical style recognized as a precursor to jazz.
    Scott Joplin was a composer and pianist who popularized the genre of ragtime music–typically piano-based songs distinguished by their syncopated beat–at the turn of the twentieth century, for which he has been dubbed “The King of Ragtime.” He composed more than forty ragtime pieces, a ballet, and two operas.
