    Launched on October 4, 1957, by the Soviet Union, Sputnik marked the beginning of the space age and the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. This tiny satellite, no bigger than a beach ball, showed that it was possible to send objects into space and keep them there, orbiting the Earth.
    The Soviet Union inaugurates the “Space Age” with its launch of Sputnik, the world’s first artificial satellite, on October 4, 1957. The spacecraft, named Sputnik after the Russian word for “fellow traveler,” was launched at 10:29 p.m. Moscow time from the Tyuratam launch base in the Kazakh Republic.
