    Due to its location on the Mississippi River, St. Louis played a pivotal role in westward expansion during the 19th century. The city was named after King Louis IX of France. St. Louis was founded in 1764 and named in honor of King Louis IX, the only French monarch to be canonized as a saint.
    It was laid out by Auguste Chouteau and named for the canonized king Louis IX of France. St. Louis was later retroceded (1800) to France and, following the Louisiana Purchase (1803), became part of the United States.
