    The Targhee was developed at the Dubois, Idaho experimental station starting in 1926 in response to a demand for a western range sheep with improved meat characteristics. The Targhee is an easy keeper, long lived, lambs on pasture and produces an excellent fleece.
    It is a dual-purpose breed, with heavy, medium-quality wool and good meat production characteristics. It is hardy and well-suited to the ranges of the West where it was developed. [2] It is kept mainly in Montana, Wyoming and South Dakota, [3] and is reared primarily for wool. [4]
