The first general-purpose teletype machine was the Model 12, which was introduced in 1922, and it was followed three years later with the Model 14, of which about 60,000 were produced. The Model 15, which was launched in 1930; it was the mainstay of U.S. military communications during WWII, and approximately 200,000 units were built.
While initially used to communicate directly between devices, the use of teletype eventually evolved into the Telex network, which effectively made it possible to distribute data through a telegraph wire or via the radio. Telex launched in Europe in the early 1930s, and AT&T launched its own version of the network starting in 1931.
