Symptoms of thalassemia depend on the type of condition, and are generally noted during childhood or adolescence and some of the commonly noted symptoms include:

• Bone deformities, particularly noted in the face
• Dark colored urine
• Delay in growth and development
• Excessive tiredness
• Shortness of breath
• Yellow or pale colored skin
• Abdominal swelling and discomfort

Common tests & procedures

Complete blood count (CBC): Done to determine the number of blood cells, and look for abnormalities in red blood cells.

Prenatal test: May be recommended to check for thalassemia in babies before they are born, in case any of the parents has thalassemia.
