A time-shared operating system is an advanced type of operating system that allows multiple users to share the computer resources simultaneously. This system is an extension of multiprogramming, where the CPU switches between tasks so frequently that users can interact with each program while it is running1.
Key Principles
In a time-shared operating system, the CPU time is divided into small intervals called time slices or quantum, typically ranging from 10 to 100 milliseconds1. Each user or process is allocated a time slice during which it can execute its tasks. The operating system rapidly switches between processes, giving the illusion of parallel execution2.
Working Mechanism
The operating system uses CPU scheduling and multiprogramming to provide each user with a small portion of the computer at once. Each user has at least one separate program in memory. When a program is loaded into memory and executes, it performs for a short period before either completing or waiting for I/O operations1. This short period is known as a time slice.
