Cancer rates amongst younger people are rising, causing concern from clinicians about why this is happening

Even though smoking rates across the world are going down, lung cancer cases are increasing among nonsmoking women. According to experts, this could be due to exposures to various toxins, apart from genetic mutations, hormones, and a few other risk factors. Since there are no screening guidelines for nonsmokers, lung cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Read on to know the signs and symptoms.

The American Cancer Society finds cancer rates are increasing in women, surpassing men in some cases. Dr. Celine Gounder, CBS News medical contributor, joins "CBS Mornings" to discuss these troubling trends and their implications.

A recent study that focused on women under 55 years old found an increase in pancreatic cancer cases. Mercy Medical Center Dr. Rohan Mandaliya, who is board certified in gastroenterology and internal medicine, told 11 News that the study couldn't find the exact reason, but one factor could be genetic mutations like the breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2.
