Date farming can have a successful cultivation in regions that have prolonged hot dry summer, moderate winter climatic conditions with no rain during the fruit ripening period. Date trees grow about 65 to 70 feet (20 to 21 m) in height.

Dates have been a staple food of the Middle East and the Indus Valley for thousands of years. There is archaeological evidence of date farming in Arabia from the 6th millennium BCE. Dates are actually the biggest oasis and desert cash crop.

The plant density in the dates farming is about 160 plants per hectare land and 10% of those must be male off-shoots to provide adequate pollen-grains, since dates are dioecious fruits. The selected field should be ploughed 2 to 3 times and levelled to bring the soil to the fine tilth stage.
