In 1866, Georges Leclanché invented a battery that consists of a zinc anode and a manganese dioxide cathode wrapped in a porous material, dipped in a jar of ammonium chloride solution. The manganese dioxide cathode has a little carbon mixed into it as well, which improves conductivity and absorption. [ 10 ]

Alessandro Giuseppe Antonio Anastasio Volta (UK: / ˈvɒltə /, US: / ˈvoʊltə /; Italian: [alesˈsandro ˈvɔlta]; 18 February 1745 – 5 March 1827) was an Italian physicist and chemist who was a pioneer of electricity and power, [1][2][3] and is credited as the inventor of the electric battery and the discoverer of methane.

It originated as a schematic drawing of the earliest type of battery, the voltaic pile. An electric battery is a source of electric power consisting of one or more electrochemical cells with external connections [1] for powering electrical devices.

1881—J.A. Thiebaut patented the first battery with both the negative electrode and porous pot placed in a zinc cup. 1881—Carl Gassner invented the first commercially successful dry cell battery (zinc-carbon cell). 1899—Waldmar Jungner invented the first nickel-cadmium rechargeable battery.

In 1859 Gaston Planté of France invented a lead-acid cell, the first practical storage battery and the forerunner of the modern automobile battery. Planté’s device was able to produce a remarkably large current, but it remained a laboratory curiosity for nearly two decades.
