  1. Zero-pressure balloons - Wikipedia

    • A zero-pressure balloon (ZP) is a style of aerostatic balloon that is unsealed at its base, creating a mechanism by which lifting gas can vent out the bottom of the balloon when the balloon becomes full, allowing the balloon to float at stable altitudes. During the day the gas heats up in the sun, and at night the gas cools causing them to descend. This limits the flight tim… See more

Zero-pressure balloons are filled with a lighter-than-air lift gas at a launch site where they are held to the ground during the launch process. Because lift gas expands as a balloon ascends, they are always sm… See more

A zero-pressure balloon is a type of aerostatic balloon that is unsealed at its base, allowing lifting gas to vent out the bottom of the balloon when it becomes full, which allows the balloon to float at stable altitudes. The balloon is made from very thin plastic sheet and is filled with helium through a tube connected to the upper portion. It has a vent to the atmosphere at the very bottom and is filled only partially on the ground. Zero pressure balloons are mainly used by the scientific community for astronomy or astrophysics missions and by space companies to test their equipment close to their final operating conditions.
