A Karnaugh Map (K-Map) is a graphical tool used to simplify Boolean expressions and minimize the number of variables in digital circuits. It is particularly useful for simplifying expressions with 3 or 4 variables without using Boolean algebra theorems1.
Structure of a 4-Variable K-Map
A 4-variable K-Map consists of a 4x4 grid, representing all possible combinations of the four variables. Each cell in the grid corresponds to a minterm or maxterm of the Boolean function.
Sum of Products (SOP) Form
In the SOP form, we place 1s in the K-Map cells corresponding to the minterms of the function. The goal is to group the 1s into the largest possible rectangular groups, where the number of cells in each group is a power of two (e.g., 1, 2, 4, 8).
Example:
Given the function ( F(P,Q,R,S) = \sum(0,2,5,7,8,10,13,15) ):
Place 1s in the cells corresponding to the minterms.
Group the 1s into rectangles.
Derive the simplified expression from the groups.
From the groups, we get:
