    The first email was sent in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, a young engineer at the firm of Bolt, Beranek and Newman. Electronic mail looked different fifty-two years ago, although one feature would still be recognizable to today’s users – the now ubiquitous @ symbol, whose use is also credited to Tomlinson.
    The first email -- or electronic message as it was called at the time -- was sent by computer engineer Ray Tomlinson back in 1971.
    It was 1971 when an U.S. programmer, Ray Tomlinson, sent history’s first email from a Massachusetts laboratory. The email inventor was then working for Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN). Back in 1969, this company had developed ARPANET (acronym for Advanced Research Projects Agency Network).
