    In 1850, 74 years after the American Revolution, upper- and middle-class New York residents appealed to New York State for a large, landscaped space. There were two reasons. First, it would be a mark of culture such as the much older European societies sported. Second, it would relieve the rapidly increasing urbanization of New York City.

    Olmsted’s vision for Central Park was inspired by Birkenhead Park, widely acknowledged as the first publicly funded park in England. Built in response to poor living conditions in the surrounding industrial areas, Birkenhead Park was built for public use, a novel idea at a time when European parks were often housed on formal estates.
