The Species Range Project has completed 685 species so far and 148 more are pending approval. 492 of these species adopted a unified Species List Area, with 16 requesting exceptions. An application containing 270 environmental co-variates is available to teams developing new species range maps.

This service contains two layers that displays species' range boundaries as either county boundaries or specific ecological ranges set by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) for federally listed species in the state of North Carolina.

Identification of candidate species can assist environmental planning efforts by providing advance notice of potential listings, and by allowing landowners, resource managers, States, Tribes, range countries, and other stakeholders to take actions to alleviate threats and thereby possibly remove the need to list species as endangered or threatened.
