    Emperor penguins have an incubation period of 66 days. During this time, mates take turns incubating the egg, allowing one partner to leave to feed for several days at a time. The chick will hatch in 65 to 75 days. The chicks are very small when they hatch, weighing only about 150 g to 200 g. Until they are able to regulate their own body temperature, it is up to the parents to keep the chicks warm. As the young penguins grow, adults leave them in groups of chicks called crèches while they leave to fish. The timing of emperor penguins' hatching is in December, when the Antarctic weather has warmed somewhat and the ice the penguins occupy begins to break up, bringing open waters closer to the nesting sites.
