The koala is the only member of the family Phascolarctidae. Unlike those of other arboreal marsupials, its pouch opens rearward. Births are single, occurring after a gestation of 34 to 36 days. The youngster (called a joey) first puts its head out of the pouch at about five months of age.
Family: | Phascolarctidae Genus: | Phascolarctos Species: | cinereus There are two subspecies of koalas: adustus, the northern or Queensland koala, and victor, the southern koala.
Koalas are marsupials, females having a pouch in which their young first develop. Their pouch faces the rear and has a drawstringlike muscle that the mother can tighten. They are the sole member of the family Phascolarctidae.
