We are proud of our zoo which sits on 28 acres of natural boreal forest located on the lower foothills of the Chugach Mountains. Our trails wind through the woods, providing visitors the opportunity to connect with nature.

Welcome to the Alaska Zoo’s live polar bear camera. This is the main shared habitat for female polar bears Cranbeary and Kova. Both bears are females, introduced to each other successfully in April of 2024. They have formed a special bond with each other. Download our polar bear cam activity packet (PDF)

Alaska Zoo Map. The Alaska Zoo is located on 23 acres in the wooded Anchorage hillside area. The zoo’s maintained gravel trails are spread over 20 acres as they wind through natural boreal forest woods and along the south fork of Little Campbell Creek. Download a zoo map here (PDF)

The Alaska Zoo (formerly The Alaska Children’s Zoo) opened to the public in August of 1969. The zoo’s story of origin is very uniquely Alaskan. How We Began. It all began back in 1966 with the arrival of a baby circus elephant named Annabelle.

If adults are zoo members and would like to use their membership at the gate, they can do so for Self Guided Safari field trips. This only applies to adult zoo members, not students. All students must pay the $10 field trip fee regardless of membership. Additional terms of entry: Arrive at the scheduled time with a completed admissions form.

Our zoo yaks originated from local yak herds in Alaska. Wild Tibetan yaks are native to the Himalayan Mountains of Nepal and Tibet. SIZE: Domestic bulls weigh from 900 to 1,200 pounds.

RANGE: Sitka deer are native to the wet, coastal rainforests of southeast Alaska and north-coastal British Columbia. SIZE: Their average weight in the fall is about 80 pounds for does (females) and 120 pounds for bucks (males).
