    OSHA does not have a comprehensive laser safety standard that applies to the use of lasers in any activity. However, OSHA’s general duty clause requires employers to maintain safe workplaces and help employees avoid serious injury and death. CAL-OSHA has not developed specific laser safety regulations, but they train their inspectors in the ANSI Z136.1 Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers as the accepted “...safe and healthy work practice...” to use in inspecting laser facilities. The American National Standard for Laser Safety requires a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) when workers use Class IIIB or Class IV lasers.
