  2. An OID is a sequence of integers that uniquely identifies a managed object by defining a path to that object through a tree-like structure called theOID treeor registration tree. When an SNMP agent needs to access a specific managed object, it traverses the OID tree to find the object.

The Object Identifier data type consists of a sequence of one or more non-negative integers, often referred to as arcs, that define a hierarchy, or tree, of object identifier values. The first arc in the sequence identifies the registration authority responsible for allocating the values of the second and subsequent arcs.

In order for all of this to be properly organized, all of the manageable features of all products (from each vendor) are arranged in this tree. Each “branch” of this tree has a number and a name, and the complete path from the top of the tree down to the point of interest forms the name of that point. This is the OID.

OIDs are very structured, and follow a hierarchical tree pattern – much like a folder structure on your computer. Unlike folders however, all SNMP objects are numbered. So, the top level after the root is ISO, and has the number “1”. The next level, ORG, has the number “3”, since it is the 3rd object under ISO, and so on.
