The tensor fasciae latae (TFL) is a muscle located in the thigh. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the pelvis and the knee during various activities such as standing, walking, and running1. The TFL originates from the iliac crest and inserts into the iliotibial tract, which attaches to the tibia1.
Structure and Function
The TFL arises from the anterior part of the outer lip of the iliac crest and the outer surface of the anterior superior iliac spine. It is inserted between the two layers of the iliotibial tract about the junction of the middle and upper thirds of the thigh1. The muscle assists in keeping the balance of the pelvis and braces the knee, especially when the opposite foot is lifted1.
The TFL is innervated by the superior gluteal nerve, which originates from the anterior rami of L4, L5, and S1 nerves1. The primary blood supply comes from the lateral circumflex femoral artery and the superior gluteal artery1.
