  2. What should I do if I have a sudden asthma attack?

If you get an acute asthma attack, try to remain calm as getting anxious may worsen the symptoms. Sit up straight and take 2-3 puffs from the MDI prescribed by your doctor. If the symptoms settle, no need to worry, you can take an appointment with the doctor at a later date but if symptoms don't improve, you may need to rush to emergency department where you will get nebulized with bronchodilators which can help relieve the symptoms immediately.

A person can first try dealing with an asthma attack by: staying calm sitting upright using quick-relief medications, usually through a blue inhaler, and following their asthma action plan calling 911 if the symptoms worsen or do not improve with medication

Reassure the casualty and ask them to take their usual dose of their reliever inhaler (usually blue). Ask them to breathe slowly and deeply. If they have a spacer available, ask them to use it with their inhaler. The inhaler is more effective with a spacer, especially when being used for young children.
