The Cassette Tape, or Compact Cassette, was first developed by the Philips company in 1962 in Belgium. Philips released the invention to Europe at the Berlin Radio Show on August 30, 1963; the invention was released in the United States in November of next year.
The compact cassette, commonly known as a cassette tape, is an analog media format developed in 1962 by the Dutch inventor and engineer Lou Ottens for the Philips Company.
In 1962 the Philips Company developed a cassette using tape half as wide as the standard 1/4-inch tape which ran between two reels in a small plastic case. The tape moved half the speed of eight-track tapes, getting a longer playing time but paying the price in terms of its limited fidelity. The Philips compact cassette was introduced in 1963.
As hard as it may be to believe, the cassette tape began its life way back in 1962 as a toy for children, according to the IEEE Global History Network. It was originally called a "compact cassette," and it made its debut in Europe. It was brought to the United States by its maker, the Phillips Company, in 1964.
The compact cassette (aka. cassette tape) was originally developed and released by Philips in 1962 in Hasselt, Belgium as an attempt to develop a new standard in audio storage. This replaced reel-to-reel recorders that were inefficient and expensive to use.
