The first garden gnomes can be traced back to the 19th century in Germany when they were created by a potter named Philipp Griebel in his workshop in Grafenroda. His gnomes were made of terra cotta and based on Germanic folklore gnomes.
Garden gnomes as we know them today, were first produced in 19th century Germany by sculptor Philip Griebel. Made of clay (and eventually resin and plastic by the 1970s and 80s), these gnomes were called Gartenzwerge or garden dwarfs.
The gnomes are believed to protect the owner from evil. The figurines originated in Germany in the 19th century and were called Gartenzwerg, which literally translates to “garden dwarf.” It wasn't until the 1930s that the English term “gnome” came to be.
The tradition originated in the 1800s, and those original garden gnomes are far different than the plastic or plaster gnomes we know today. The first known garden gnomes were produced in Germany in the early 1800s. They were made out of clay.
