    • According to 3 sources
C-14 is formed in the upper atmosphere by nuclear reactions initiated by neutrons in cosmic radiation (14 N 7 + 1 n → 14 C 6 + 1 H 1). Once formed, the C-14 reacts with oxygen to form 14 CO 2. This enters the carbon cycle, circulating through the atmosphere, oceans and biosphere.
Carbon 14 is continually being formed in the upper atmosphere by the effect of cosmic ray neutrons on nitrogen 14 atoms. It is rapidly oxidized in air to form carbon dioxide and enters the global carbon cycle. Plants and animals assimilate carbon 14 from carbon dioxide throughout their lifetimes.
Carbon-14 is continually being produced in the upper atmosphere where nitrogen-14 (14 N) atoms are bombarded with neutrons produced by cosmic rays. The chemical properties of 14 C are similar to those of 12 C. Hence, once formed, it combines with oxygen and mixes into the biosphere just like 12 C.

    Carbon-14 - Wikipedia

Carbon-14 was discovered on February 27, 1940, by Martin Kamen and Sam Ruben at the University of California Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California. Its existence had been suggested by Franz Kurie in 1934. [3] See more

Carbon-14, C-14, C or radiocarbon, is a radioactive isotope of carbon with an atomic nucleus containing 6 protons and 8 neutrons. Its presence in organic matter is the basis of the radiocarbon dating method pioneered by See more

Radiocarbon dating is a radiometric dating method that uses C to determine the age of carbonaceous materials up to about 60,000 years old. … See more

Oct 10, 2016 · In 1946, Willard Libby proposed an innovative method for dating organic materials by measuring their content of carbon-14, a newly discovered radioactive isotope of carbon. Known as radiocarbon dating, this method …

  11. What is Carbon Dating? | University of Chicago News

It is based on the fact that living organisms—like trees, plants, people, and animals—absorb carbon-14 into their tissue. When they die, the carbon-14 starts to change into other atoms over time. Scientists can estimate how long the …

  13. Dating - Carbon-14, Cosmogenic, Geochronology

It is now clear that carbon-14 is not homogeneously distributed among today’s plants and animals. The occasional exceptions all involve nonatmospheric contributions of carbon-14-depleted carbon dioxide to organic synthesis.

  14. Radiocarbon Dating Calculator (Carbon 14 Dating)

Carbon-14 has an abundance of about 1 part per trillion of carbon-12. The isotopes carbon-12 and carbon-13 are stable, but carbon-14 is radioactive. It decays into nitrogen-14 (14 N) through beta decay.
