    Esophagus inflammation or esophagitis is the changes or swelling of the esophagus that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. The causes of esophagitis are GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease). The reason behind this is, in GERD, there is acid reflux from the stomach into the food pipe which irritates the esophagus and the nearby structure throat. This irritation leads to an increase in the production of mucus by the throat and the esophagus, to protect them from damage caused by acid reflux and leads to esophageal inflammation. The other causes of esophageal inflammation are infections, oral medicines, trauma, and allergies. Esophageal tumors, liver cirrhosis, enlarged veins in the esophagus(esophageal varies), and the strain caused to the esophagus while coughing leads to the esophagus inflammation.
