Based on his research for the book and mini-series The Pacific, author Hugh Ambrose suggested that Basilone was not killed by a mortar, but by small arms fire that hit him in the right groin and the neck, and nearly took off his left arm.

Within five minutes, Marine machine gun positions led by Sgt John Basilone opened fire killing nearly all the attackers. During the assault, Basilone moved an extra gun into position and maintained continual fire against the incoming Japanese soldiers.

Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was killed in action on 19 February 1945. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, in Section 12, Grave 384, Grid Y/Z 23.5. His widow, Marine Sergeant Lena Mae Basilone, died 11 June 1999 at the age of 86 and was buried at Riverside National Cemetery.
