    • According to 4 sources
Most believe caramel was created more than 1,020 years ago in 1000 AD by Arabs mixing sugar and water to create a crystallized liquid.
The exact origins of caramel are uncertain, but it is believed to have been first produced by Arabs around 1000 A.D. Modern caramel, as we know it, was developed in the late 1800s by confectioners who added milk and fat to a mixture of sugar or beet juice.
It’s thought the most basic form of caramel was first made by the Arabs around 1,000 AD by mixing sugar and water to form a crystallised liquid, that they used initially in the beauty industry, (think waxing and sugaring) and later becoming a confection which they first called simply a “ball of sweet.”
Caramel candies have a long, though unclear, history. While some consider caramel a purely American-made confection, others believe that Arabs were the first to discover caramel around 1000 AD.
