    • According to 3 sources
Born Lois Ann Hammersberg on March 20, 1937, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Lowry is one of America's most popular and versatile children's book authors. She has written in a variety of fictional forms, from the WWII tale Number the Stars to the lighthearted adventures of Anastasia Krupnik to the fantastical The Giver.
Since then, Lowry has written more than twenty books for young adults, including the popular Anastasia series and Number the Stars, which won the Newbery Medal and the National Jewish Book Award in 1990. She was inspired to write The Giver— which won the 1994 Newbery medal—after visiting her elderly father in a nursing home.
Lowry received another Newbery in 1994, for The Giver (1993). After publishing The Giver, she went on to publish another three companion novels that take place in the same universe: Gathering Blue (2000), Messenger (2004), and finally Son (2012), which tied all three of the previous books together.
