In December 1402, during Wenceslas' imprisonment in Vienna, Sigismund attacked Kuttenberg and by the beginning of the following year seized and ransacked the town. Kuttenberg was loyal to the King and staunchly defended by its miners.

At Kutná Hora in the early winter of 1421, the Taborites were encircled by the superior forces of the Holy Roman Empire under King Sigismund. Even though Sigismund's elite heavy cavalry was kept at bay by Žižka's artillery, the Taborites apparently faced imminent destruction.

In December of 1402, Sigismund conquered and sacked the city of Kuttenberg, stealing a large amount of silver. This allowed him to expand his already powerful army.

After Sigismund forced his brother Wenceslas IV to abdicate, he invaded the Kingdom of Bohemia at the head of a massive army, composed mostly by mercenaries such as Cumans. One of his most trustworthy men was indeed Sir Markvart von Aulitz, who led the attack on Kuttenberg.
