    Cancer In March 1938, Powell was diagnosed with rectal cancer. He underwent surgery and experimental radium treatment, which put the disease in full remission within two years.
    In 1937 the actor's career was halted for more than a year by what was then described as a stomach and abdominal ailment, requiring several operations. Decades later, he acknowledged that the illness had been rectal cancer. He was treated with radiation, pronounced cured, and told an interviewer in 1963, ''I was one of the lucky ones.''
    In 1938, he had a bout with rectal cancer but, with treatment, had a full recovery. He died of heart failure at 91. He was cremated and his ashes buried without fanfare beside his only child, who had tragically committed suicide in 1968.
